Margins Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 21, 2026

Margins (“the Extension”) is a browser extension that lets you highlight text and add notes on any webpage. This policy describes what data the Extension collects, how it is used, and who it is shared with.

Data Collected

Data stored locally on your device

All highlights, notes, article metadata (URL, title, reading progress), and saved article content are stored locally in your browser using IndexedDB and chrome.storage. This data never leaves your device unless you opt in to sync (see below).

Data collected when you sign in

If you choose to sign in with Google, the Extension receives your Google user ID, email address, and display name. These are used solely to authenticate you and enable cross-device sync. The Extension does not access your Google contacts, Drive, Gmail, or any other Google services.

Data synced to the server

If you sign in, your highlights, notes, and article metadata are synced to a server operated by the Extension developer (hosted at margin-api.kitsune.moi). This allows your data to be available across your devices. Synced data includes:

How Your Data Is Used

Your data is used exclusively to provide the Extension’s core functionality:

Your data is never used for advertising, analytics, tracking, or any purpose unrelated to the Extension’s functionality.

Third Parties

No data is sold to third parties. No data is shared with third parties for purposes unrelated to the Extension’s core functionality.

Data Retention and Deletion

Local data can be cleared at any time by uninstalling the Extension or clearing your browser’s extension storage. If you have synced data and wish to have it deleted from the server, contact the developer at the email listed on the Chrome Web Store listing.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy is updated, the “Last updated” date at the top will be revised. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

Contact

If you have questions about this privacy policy, contact the developer through the Chrome Web Store listing or the project’s GitHub repository.
